Complete Your Bachelor’s Degree in Digital Media and Communication
February 19, 2019 | Written By Ashley Eneriz
If you’re interested in making a difference in other people’s lives, you can complete your bachelor’s degree in digital media to equip yourself with the skills and tools you need to be a force of positive change in the world. Azusa Pacific University recently introduced its new Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media and Communication degree completion program at its Inland Empire and Murrieta regional campuses, which can give you the start you need to be successful in the field.
Pursue a Fulfilling Career
Many hands play a vital role in just one piece of information. For example, an online article may flow through multiple writers and editors, a content manager, and several social media strategists before publication. This is good news for those interested in the digital media field—it means job opportunities are plentiful!
The Los Angeles Times reported that in Los Angeles and Orange County alone, digital media was responsible for 206,880 jobs in 2016. Moreover, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), media and communication jobs are predicted to grow by 6 percent through 2026. Here’s a sample of fulfilling careers you can have in the industry:
Writer Reporter Editor Content manager Marketing or communication director Social media manager Advertising specialist Public relations specialist Radio, podcast, or video talent
The BLS noted that the median annual salary for media occupations was $56,340 in May 2017. While this is almost $20,000 more than the median annual salary for all occupations, the statistics don’t represent the whole picture. Many full-time and freelance professionals in this field earn six-figure incomes because their skills are so vital to businesses and publications.
This is especially true for those living in cities rich with digital media careers. Pamela Fisher, director of APU’s Digital Media and Communication program, noted that, “According to a 2015 Los Angeles Economic Development report, the average digital media professional earns nearly double the region’s average salary of $59,890, earning an average of $116,820.”
Make a Positive Impact
Every company needs a strong content and public relations team. Think about it. How does a fashion boutique increase sales? Skilled copywriting and advertising help convert shoppers into buyers. How does a city diffuse an image-damaging situation? Well-crafted press releases and positive news reporting help balance the city’s reputation.
Your words and ideas can have a huge impact. For instance, your guide on preventing home fires can potentially save lives, or your marketing campaign for a nonprofit pregnancy center can raise enough funds to help families in need.
Gain Marketable Skills
The needs of the digital media industry are constantly evolving and require a certain skill set to succeed. Accordingly, APU’s BA in Digital Media and Communication degree was designed with the working professional in mind.
“Emerging technology in the last decade has accelerated the speed of editing and publishing dramatically,” explained Fisher. “We no longer have time to train great writers in four or five digital platforms or best social media integration practices. We expect them to present digital portfolios of their stories, video, and social media skill sets in the hiring process.”
Completing your bachelor’s degree in digital media gives you an edge upon graduation. You can leave campus with a rich portfolio and the expertise to thrive in the marketplace. You will strengthen your storytelling abilities, hone your presentation skills, and develop your understanding of ethical challenges in the industry, making you an invaluable asset to the digital world (and your future company).
