Joseph Brings Color to APU
April 06, 2006 | Written By Katelyn Noll '07
APU’s Department of Theatre, Film and Television presented Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat from March 16-31. The play sold out before it opened, making it the third play in the department’s history to do so, and two extra performances were added to meet demands.
The play, which celebrates the color we enjoy in life as a gift from God, features a brightly colored set and costumes, provided by APU students, faculty, staff, and friends.
The play follows the life of Joseph from the Bible, and is told through several different time periods and locations, including contemporary time, 1950’s America, a French café, and others. The time period changes called for appropriate costume changes. There were 50 actors in the production, and because of the large cast and different costumes for each member, “students were asked to provide their own shoes, black pants, white shirts, and other small things” to help with costs, according to director Brian Mercer.
The show was bright and joyful, with songs and dances performed by the talented cast, choreographed by Clara Martinez.
This is the second show this semester to sell out before opening night (the first was The Sound of Music). The Department of Theatre, Film and Television has once again surpassed expectations with this wonderful production.
“I'd say that overall it was a big success and that everyone really enjoyed the experience, said Mercer. “I know for me seeing a show close that you've had so much success with and that required so much effort is always bittersweet. Also, Joseph broke pretty much every attendance record we have.”
