Midnight Madness 2002
November 07, 2002 | Written By Jessica Boggs ’03
Let’s get this party started!
More than 1,000 APU students came to kick off the Cougar men’s and women’s basketball season with a bang on November 5, 2002, in the Richard and Vivian Felix Event Center during APU’s Midnight Madness.
“The people had a lot of fun tonight,” said Kara Van Essen, the athletic development intern who planned the event with director of development Ethan Hamilton. “The crowd was real responsive and it was a fun, relaxed evening for everyone.”
The APU Office of Athletics, ASB, and Communiversity worked together to plan an evening full of excitement and APU spirit. Festivities began at 9 p.m. as Nana’s Ice Creamery served free ice cream in the foyer. The activities began at 10 p.m., and included highlights from last season’s basketball games; student, faculty, and staff contests; shooting contests; entertainer Captain Midnight; and a shot for $10,000. APU’s cheerleaders performed for the crowd, as did APU’s hip-hop ministry team, The Calling.
“Midnight Madness kicks off a new season for us,” said Matt Moore, Cougar forward. “It gets the school involved and helps pump us up.” The men’s basketball team plays their first game November 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the event center against Union University. The women’s basketball team plays their first game November 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the event center against Houston Baptist University.
