Video Introduction

Bryant Mathews, PhD, teaches a variety of mathematics courses at APU. He enjoys helping students to combine visual intuition, logical reasoning, and creative experimentation to solve problems. Mathews coaches APU's team for the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition and serves on the board of the Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences (ACMS). He has served as Chair of the Department of Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Physics, and Statistics, Chair of the Undergraduate Program Review Committee, and Interim Director of General Education.
Mathews studied algebraic geometry in graduate school and wrote a thesis computing the canonical dimensions of certain projective homogeneous varieties. His publications are in the areas of algebraic geometry, mathematics pedagogy, and the integration of faith and mathematics. At APU, Mathews has mentored students pursuing summer research projects in tropical linear algebra, graph labeling, and voting theory. He is currently leading a combinatorial game theory research team.
Mathews's other interests include the philosophy of mathematics, New Testament studies, and hiking with his family. He recently served as Chair of a School Site Council and Secretary of the District Advisory Council in the Pasadena Unified School District.
