David Beatty, MM, MBA

Professor Emeritus, Department of Music
Office Location: East Campus, Warren Music Center, Room 229
David Beatty has been blessed to have two careers, the first as a professional musician and the second as a music educator. Beginning in 1978, he spent over twenty years as a studio trombone player. His performance experiences include a wide variety of credits including music for motion pictures, television, commercials, as well as recording projects for many artists. Live performance credits range from symphony orchestras to Broadway national road tour shows. He has extensive big band jazz experience in both modern and traditional bands, including tours of duty in the Bill Watrous Wildlife Refuge West, and several international tours with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. In addition to performance credits, he dabbles in some composing and arranging. As a music preparation professional, he has worked on hundreds of TV shows and motion pictures and has worked in the music libraries of several major motion picture companies, including Warner Bros. and the Walt Disney Company.
Beatty’s second career has been as a music educator, serving the School of Music for 24 years as originator and Chair of the Commercial Music Department. He is currently faculty emeritus in Commercial Music at Azusa Pacific University. During his tenure, he directed the critically acclaimed APU Jazz Ensemble, who, under his leadership, performed extensively throughout the western United States, toured internationally, and gave concerts that featured a lineup of some of the greatest jazz artists in the world. The band made several recordings, appeared in numerous jazz festivals, and developed a national reputation for musical excellence. In addition to APU, he is currently on the music faculty at Citrus College, California Baptist University, and University of California, Riverside. Past teaching experience includes thirteen years on the faculty at Idyllwild Arts Academy Summer Jazz in the Pines, as well as music faculty positions at California State University San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona.
In addition to continuing to perform, Beatty is a frequent adjudicator and clinician for jazz festivals, camps, and clinics throughout California.
