Ted Sugata joined the Pacific Symphony in the 2014–2015 season, having previously performed with the Sarasota Orchestra in Florida and served as the principal oboist at the Lyrique-en-Mer Opera Festival in Belle-Île, France. A talented chamber and orchestral musician, Sugata has worked with many groups, such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Long Beach Symphony, South Bay Chamber Music Society, Jacaranda Music, and the Glendale Noon Concert Series.
Sugata is passionately dedicated to guiding upcoming music students and honoring the legacy of his mentors. He has taught at various institutions, including Chapman University, Azusa Pacific University, Long Beach City College, the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts, Idyllwild Arts Summer, and the Montecito Orchestra Institute, where he shares his expertise in oboe performance with aspiring musicians. His students have successfully gained acceptance into prestigious music programs at institutions such as the Juilliard School, Cleveland Institute of Music, New England Conservatory, Rice University, Indiana University, and USC. His former students have also obtained positions with organizations like the New York Philharmonic and Houston Grand Opera/Ballet.
A Los Angeles native, Sugata pursued advanced studies at the Manhattan School of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music under Joseph Robinson and John Mack, respectively. He has also participated in music festivals, including the Tanglewood Music Center, the National Repertory Orchestra, the Music Academy of the West, and the Sarasota Music Festival. In 2014, he completed his Doctor of Musical Arts in oboe performance at the University of Southern California under Joel Timm.
Sugata lives with his wife, Colleen, and their two children in California Heights. They enjoy spending their free time at their children's activities, traveling, reading, and watching their favorite TV shows.
