Department of Biology and Chemistry

Preparing Students for Success in the Sciences

The Department of Biology and Chemistry, housed in the School of Humanities and Sciences, provides an environment where students can develop a Christian worldview and learn to integrate their faith into their lives as scientists.

The department offers four undergraduate majors, two minors, and the Master of Science in Biotechnology program, while also offering courses that meet the goals of the General Education program and lend support to students in other majors. Additionally, available research opportunities complement students’ classroom learning and prepare them for graduate or professional studies and for success in their chosen careers.

Scriptural Stations of the Cross: A Devotional Reflection on the Science of Jesus’ Crucifixion

For 20 years, Azusa Pacific University professor Cahleen Shrier, PhD, has shared with her biology students a significant and moving lecture outlining the physical suffering leading up to and during Jesus’ crucifixion.

Shrier’s perennial lecture was the focus of a 2002 article on the Science of the Crucifixion, which has since been viewed thousands of times and used in churches and faith communities as a tool for study and prayer.
