What is mobile learning?
Through the use of mobile technology, namely connected handheld devices and apps, learners are able to consume and create education content anytime, anywhere, from any device.
Why is mobile learning important to higher education?
Mobile technology makes possible ubiquitous and instantaneous access to information and communication, redefining where, when, and how teaching and learning happens. In particular, mobile technology offers a new model of learning that enhances and extends the traditional classroom experience, allowing students to learn just what they need (micro-learning), when they need it (just-in-time learning), and in the manner they learn best (personalized learning).
What are some typical ways to use mobile technology in a course?
- Use mobile devices as “clickers” to engage students during class.
- Use mobile devices to contribute to “backchannel discussion” before, during, and after class.
- Use mobile devices to collect and analyze data (e.g., photos, videos, interviews, data, etc.) for class projects.
- Leverage appropriate mobile apps to reinforce key concepts and extend learning.
How is APU preparing for mobile learning?
Through various training and professional development opportunities, such as the Mobile Learning Institute (MLI), faculty members from selected schools receive practical and pedagogical training about the use of mobile technology to enhance the student learning experience.
