What is the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)?
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is its own unique field of study with the goal of advancing disciplinary dialogue about effective teaching. SoTL uses the classroom as a laboratory to study what is happening or working in the design of learning experiences. Furthermore, SoTL is scholarship when the teacher-researcher writes up their findings to advance conversations within (and beyond) disciplines about the dynamics of effective teaching. SoTL results in more accurate understanding of student learning (what is really happening?) leading to improvements in the faculty member’s work, with the added benefits of informing others in an appropriately rigorous way.
