In February, Azusa Pacific University’s faculty senate approved a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Cinematic Arts: Production, paving the way for an unprecedented program in Christian higher education.

The BFA is a professional degree that prepares students for work in the arts and entertainment industry of Hollywood. Major changes from the previous Bachelor of Art degree include a required internship, more hands-on study of creative and technical subjects, and a required capstone project.

"We're very proud and excited to offer the first BFA in cinema among the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities," said Michael Smith, associate professor in the Department of Theater, Film, and Television. "This is an intense degree program that requires the highest standards in arts education, which will prepare APU students to enter the highly competitive and rewarding professional arena of Hollywood."

The new degree will begin in fall 2010. All new production students will be required to enroll in the BFA program, while continuing students will have the option to transfer into the BFA degree or to continue in the previous BA degree in production. The Department of Theater, Film, and Television will continue to offer BA degrees in screenwriting and critical studies.

During the course of their studies, students will write or produce more than 10 projects, creating a portfolio that demonstrates their skill and experience. The capstone projects provide an opportunity to produce a short film, write a creative or critical work, or create a reel or creative portfolio. Thanks to APU's close proximity to Hollywood, "A-list" internships are readily available, providing insider experience prior to graduation. These internships provide students with a first-hand view of production processes, ensuring that they graduate with experience and professional contacts in the field.
