Azusa Pacific University’s Department of Theater Arts presents Lauren Gunderson’s Silent Sky. The show runs from April 11-20 with Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m., as well as Saturday matinee shows at 2 p.m. The production takes place in the Black Box Theater, located on APU’s West Campus, at 701 E. Foothill Blvd. in Azusa. Free parking is available. General admission tickets cost $21, with discounted tickets for senior citizens, children, students, and alumni. For tickets, call the Felix Event Center Box Office at (626) 815-5494 or order them online. Purchasing tickets in advance is highly recommended.
Silent Sky beautifully examines the life of 19th century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, who explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. Leavitt and her female peers’ dedication changed the way we understand both the heavens and Earth. Due to language, the production is recommended for ages 15 and up. Silent Sky is directed by adjunct professor Andi Chapman, MFA.
“Henrietta Leavitt’s story is a reminder of the remarkable resilience and determination of a woman in the face of societal challenges,” Chapman said. “Despite the dismissive attitudes towards women's ideas during the 19th century, Henrietta and her female peers persevered and made significant contributions to the field of astronomy.”
APU’s plays and musicals are produced through a program of rigorous training. The Department of Theater Arts prepares outstanding, innovative, and influential artists in an ever-growing and multi-faceted performing arts profession. The department is nationally ranked BFA in Acting for The Stage and Screen program.
