Covina-Valley Unified School District is partnering with Azusa Pacific University to create a pathway to college for Covina’s high school students. The Covina-Valley Board of Education approved a memorandum of understanding with APU at its June 19 meeting. This agreement provides Covina, Northview, and South Hills high school students who meet admissions requirements with guaranteed admittance to APU, a $10,000 renewable scholarship, application fee waiver, and support with the application process.
“On behalf of our Board of Education, staff, students, and their families, we look forward to this exciting opportunity with APU,” said Superintendent Richard Sheehan, EdD, who holds a Master’s in Pupil Personnel Services and an Administrative Credential from APU. “Covina-Valley is committed to the success of all students. The partnership with APU is another addition to our outstanding opportunities for our students, which include the Dual Language programs in Spanish and Mandarin, and our partnership with Code To The Future, creating the Coding Schools K-8."
The agreement begins fall 2017 and also includes this year’s graduates who met the program’s academic requirements. Incoming high school freshmen who successfully follow the academic pathway all four years will be eligible. In addition, current sophomores and juniors, who meet the requirements, may pursue this educational option.
“Azusa Pacific University and Covina-Valley students both benefit from small class sizes, a caring culture, and strong academics so our school is a natural fit for their graduates, yet private college can seem out of reach for many families,” said President Jon R. Wallace, DBA. “We are committed to making college more accessible and affordable for our neighbors and we look forward to welcoming many Covina- Valley students into our APU family.”
